A Structurally Perfect Repair in the Wrong Color Is Still a Bad Repair

Repointing can be done exactly right — right depth, right mortar strength, clean joints — and still look wrong for the life of the house if the new mortar does not match the old. Mortar color is not a paint choice; it comes from the sand, the cement, and any mineral pigment in the mix, and it changes again as the joint cures and weathers. That is why a bag of gray mortar from the hardware store almost never matches a Dallas–Fort Worth home: most brick homes across the metroplex were built with buff, tan, or nearly white local sands, and their joints read warm — not hardware-store gray.

Our mortar repair and tuckpointing crews treat matching as part of the repair, not an extra. When the color is off, the repair advertises itself on every wall it touches — and on a home you plan to sell, a visible patchwork of mismatched joints reads as a problem the next buyer's inspector will circle.

How Champion Matches Mortar

It starts with the mortar that is already in your wall. We take a sample of the original joint, look at the sand color and grain and the binder behind it, and blend test batches against it. Those test batches go on the wall as small panels and are judged the only honest way — dry and cured, next to the existing joints, in daylight. Wet mortar always lies about its final color, so a match is never called off a mixing bucket. The blend gets adjusted with mineral pigments until the cured panel disappears into the wall, and only then do we grind out and repoint the full scope with that mix.

Matching is also about strength

Color is half the job. The replacement mortar also has to match the original in hardness and texture: too hard a mortar in an older, softer brick wall forces movement into the brick faces and spalls them, which is why our brick restoration work on older homes uses period-appropriate mixes. Sand grain size sets the joint's texture and shadow line, so the blend is matched for all three — color, strength, and texture — before a single production joint is pointed.

Mortar Matching Across Dallas–Fort Worth

The matching work follows the housing stock. The 1960s–1990s brick homes along the Coit Road and US-75 corridors in Dallas and Richardson carry buff and tan joints that gray mortar betrays instantly. Older homes in Highland Park and in Fort Worth's Fairmount and Ryan Place neighborhoods carry lighter, lime-rich joints that need a softer, paler blend — and a gentler mix — than anything sold premixed. Whatever the era, the standard is the same: from the street, the repair should be invisible. Mortar Color Matching Starts With the Right Repair

Matching matters most where the joint work is heaviest: full-elevation tuckpointing, corridor homes needing mortar repair near Coit Road in Dallas and Richardson, and brick replacement that has to blend into an older wall. The process on this page is the same one our crews run on brick repair in Dallas and across DFW — composition first, color second, judged on a cured test batch. Call (817) 523-1540 with photos of the wall and we will tell you what a match on your mortar takes.
